Going back to school at 50+

I married the first time when I was 17 years old, had my first baby at the age of 19, second at 21 and after that there just never seemed to be enough money or time to return to school.  Now that I am 50 I have this burning desire to return to school.  I don't have a problem with money or time now...the kids are on their own, I am self-employed with my husband in work that does not require my full-time attention, however we are on the road quite a bit because 'Mr Holly' is a property investor & contractor so we go where the properties are.  So I thought I would attend an online college.  I am not sure what I am going to work towards, I don't really want to go for a degree at this moment, but may think about that sometime in the future.  I would love to learn more about subjects that have always interested me like psychology.  I have always been fascinated by abnormal psychology especially.  So I just signed up for a beginning psychology course at Rio Salado Community College and I will see where that takes me.

What are your thoughts about returning to school at 50+?  Personally I think I would be a much better student at this age because I am not easily distracted by 'the cute guy in the class', or other extracurricular activities.  I am now old enough to understand the value of studying, taking good notes, and just being a more focused student then I was at 18.  I also recently read that studies show that continuing education is one way to prevent Alzheimer's and other age-related memory loss.  Who wouldn't want to avoid memory problems?

Have you returned to school as and 'older' student?  Did you do it to earn a degree or just for personal interest?  If you haven't returned to school, have you thought about doing it?  What's keeping you from enrolling?  I would love it if you would share your thoughts.

  1. I'm 42 and working on my dissertation. Hubby's 48 and just went back to school two semesters ago to finish up his BS that he started when he was 19. I love it and so does he (except during finals and then he's not so agreeable, hahaha). Best of luck to you! I'm your latest follower, visiting today from Freedom Fridays.

  2. My advice? Go back!

After originally graduating from college in 1989, I returned in 2000. I enjoyed it so much more from a "grown-up" perspective, but it was odd being the same age as many of the professors.

Now I'm taking online classes at Coursera just for the fun of it.

  3. Thank you for the encouragement! I agree that college from a "grown-up" perspective is much better. I actually like the idea of learning just for fun. In 2007 I took an Algebra and English class at our community college just to prove to myself that I could do it. I got an A+ in both classes :-)

I am ready and eager to Learn!
